The Thailand School Project came about after Angie’s husband Tom came back from Thailand in 2008. They had done a fresh water project in a tiny village in Northern Thailand. He was so touched by how the people had no material possessions and yet they were so happy. He felt like we needed to do more. After taking with Mike Mann the missionary there, we decided to start fundraising to build a school in Northern Thailand. Mike feels that education is next after getting clean fresh water to the villages. The people are refugees from Burma (what is now Myanmar) and China. They settled in Thailand where they are put up with, but have no rights, they are exploited and there is much drug trafficking, and sex trafficking. They are in dire poverty only making about $125 American Dollars a year. They grow what they eat and sell what is left. They are not educated and do not speak Thai language. We feel that education is vital in helping them to get out of poverty, opium trade, and to help them better adjust to Thai society and even be able to become citizens which would give them rights! The school would draw children from at least 3 villages and would ultimately get all the children through at least the 6th grade and the parents through at least the 4th grade. They would then be able to better trade in the bigger towns and cities and maybe be able to get jobs.
It will cost roughly $46,000 to build the building and about $30,000 a year to run the school for the first five years. The goal is to help the area grow economically enough in those five years that they would be able to support the school after that. So ultimately we will need to raise about $200,000 but it will be in $30,000 increments.
